Tips & Care

Every piece of jewellery is handcrafted in my studio in Copenhagen. I advise you to take care of your jewellery.

All Michala Eken jewellery are made in recycled 925 sterling silver or 14ct or 18ct gold. Goldplatings are 24ct. I strive to use environmentally conscious techniques and chemicals where possible and for my jewellery production to have as little impact on the environment as possible.

All oxidized and goldplated jewellery items are surface treated, which will fade over time. For best maintenance; avoid contact with water or chemical products (such as soap, perfume, hairspray etc.) and keep the jewellery in an air-tight jewellery box, when not in use.

Silver naturally turns black due to a chemical reaction that happens with the oxygen in the air. Gold plating is a thin layer of gold on an item so be careful not to rub too much when you polish your gold plated jewellery. The gold plating will eventually wear out over time. This is normal.

The same thing applies to our oxidized jewellery. We have chemically fast-forwarded the natural oxidizing process silver has when in contact with oxygen. However it is only a thin layer and will eventually wear off over time. Most local jewellers provide a gold plating and oxidizing service to return the items to their original condition.

If your Michala Eken jewellery need to get its shine back, whether it is in need of a new goldplating, oxidizing, cleaning or polish, you are always welcome to contact me, and we can find a solution. I clean and re-polish my jewellery free of charge. A new goldplating with 24 karat gold will usually cost between 100-500 DKK depending on the jewellery. A re-oxidating costs between 50-200 DKK.
